Unexpected things, and people, prowl late at night in this
"unanticipated encounter" for Call of Cthulhu by
William Jones.
Excerpt:
There is a time of night when the dark streets and
alleyways of any city bring uneasiness to those who
venture out. It is at this time, when shadows are deep and
the world is hushed that strange events sometimes occur.
This scene is designed for
keepers to use as a brief encounter in an existing
scenario or larger campaign. It is also ideal for a
"flash" game, a thirty-minute session. Bad Sleep is
set in the 1920s, but can readily be altered for most
other periods. It is designed for any number of players,
and for players of any ability. Keepers should feel free
to adjust the elements and location as needed....

A three-part article about the FBI. Part one
explores the Bureau and provides background and a new
occupation template for investigators who want to be
special agents.
Excerpt: This is the first of a three-part,
multi-author series exploring the history and development
of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Part I examines
the creation of the Bureau and traces it to 1924. The
remaining two articles in the series continue through the
1930s to the present. Each article in the series contains
useful history and facts for keepers and investigators who
want to include one of the world's most renowned
investigative agencies in their scenarios or campaigns....

A Greenwich Village publisher learns that he's dealing
with more than words. This scenario by William Jones takes
place in Greenwich Village in the 1920s and also is a
mini-guidebook to Greenwich Village in the 1920s.
Excerpt:
Greenwich Village is one of New York City's most
renowned districts. It is considered the birthplace of
American counter-culture, and a fertile ground for art,
poetry, writing and philosophy. It is located on the lower
west side of Manhattan Island, and has always been
socially isolated from the rest of the Big Apple.
The Village's rebellious
attitude that had burned a permanent mark on the map of
New York City in the early 1900s was already beginning to
cool by the 1920s. Prior to WWI, Greenwich Village was
buzzing with inhabitants who cut against the cultural
grain of America. Artists, philosophers, writers,
activists, publishers, musicians and poets came to the
Village to produce art for the sake of art, not for
profit. These "long-haired" radicals believed that
capitalism and politics hindered art, and they were
determined to create art free from the shackles of
commercialism...

Forget the stars... when the bytes are right, humanity is
doomed. Part one of a two-part fiction (continued in
the second issue of Book of Dark Wisdom) by Steven
L. Shrewsbury.
Excerpt:
You must think me mad, but you have to listen!" the
frantic voice squealed into the ears of the three men
sitting in the radio studio. "I'm not a nutty caller!
I'm an educated scholar! You must believe me! There's
nothing but doom for this planet if you allow this tome of
evil to be published! It must never see this format, not
in its raw form! You must accept the dire responsibility
of the ages and refuse the mad dreams of the elder gods!
Sit there in your darkened studio and laugh but the MPs
will come for you, for your stygian blasphemy! The
Melchizedek People shall send their holy man to-" With
that the voice was cut short and the men in the studio
exchanged glances. Silence reigned briefly.
The old man hosting the program
proceeded onward and upward, trying to ignore the
radical caller. "And we are back now to Seth On 66.
I am your host, Dr. Seth Birch from Northwestern
University. I apologize for that caller that slipped past
my screener. You will recall that my distinguished guests
this evening are Professor Emeritus from Miskatonic
University, Eliot Thilinghast, author of the new book, 'Antediluvian
America.' Welcome Dr. Thilinghast...."

Upgrade your virus-checker.after this "unanticipated
encounter" by David Conyers, you'll never see your
computer in the same light.
Excerpt:
Gilbert Hallows is dead, or so he'd like everyone to
believe. A renowned hacker known on the World Wide Web by
his alias GhostMail, Hallows has recently found himself in
hot water with the same Cthulhu Mythos worshipping cult
that the investigators are currently looking into. A week
ago Hallows hacked into the cult's servers and learned
more than he was bargaining for, horrible truths.
Simultaneously the cult discovered that Hallows had read
their sensitive files, and so decided that he must be
eliminated.
This short Cthulhu Now
encounter is designed to be incorporated into a longer
scenario or campaign. Due to the nature of computers and
the Internet inherent to the narrative, this tale does not
translate well to other time periods or settings....
