Parting Shot by Don D'Ammassa

My friends tell me I'm frequently oblivious to emotional nuances, but even I noticed that Wilson Berlanger wasn't exactly the most popular man in Misquonet. He wasn't shunned, exactly. Mrs. Parsons was perfectly happy to take his money when he came into her store, and Nelson's Filling Station pumped gas into that beat up Ford truck without a moment's hesitation. But there was no unnecessary conversation, no friendly greeting, no wave of farewell....

Variations on the Vile by Richard Gavin & D.F. Lewis

"Oh, this one I keep more for kitsch value than anything else."

The comments of Alvin were in reference to the dust-frosted bottle, which Lillian, houseguest and latest object of Alvin's desire, had lifted down from the tiny shelf where it had stood undisturbed for over a decade....

Last Light by Melanie Logue & Eric S. Brown

Plague of Fire by Lee Clark Zumpe

Ben Carter went home early Thursday afternoon.

His coworkers had hounded him all morning, insisting that he seemed lethargic and quiet. One of the girls in the customer service center - a pudgy twenty-year old who normally flirted with him - wandered over to his bench just before lunch and told him he looked pale and "icky." She suggested he take the day off once he had finished repairing the VCR sitting dissected on the counter before him. She patted his head teasingly and wandered back to her cubicle....

The Terror at Woodruff by Michael Penncavage

It was a murky late September evening when Wade McKinley concluded that something nefarious had befallen his longtime friend and colleague, Lars VanBuren. Two weeks had passed since he received this short, cryptic Western Union wire.

Wade. Arrived in town ten days prior. Odd things happening. Fear for my safety stop taking all precautions. Will contact you in ten days with update. Lars....

Mrs. Pritchett -

It is with profound misgivings that I convey to you these letters, which were recovered upon the island of Huaramora five days past. And it is with deep condolences that I inform you that your husband, Mr. Andrew Pritchett, has passed away. He received a Christian burial at sea, as his remains were not suitable for transmittal to Townsville....

Prey by Stephen Leclerc

Billy ran through the open door and down the steps towards the school's parking lot. Above him, the sky had turned into a dull gray. In no time at all, daylight's remnants would be a distant memory, replaced by the darkest shades of night....

Vanishing Curves by David Conyers

Right at this moment in her life Zoe didn't like her job. In fact she hated it, mostly because the deadlines imposed by the client had demanded too many late nights these last few weeks. Without a car she was forced to catch the train home, in the darkness....

A Change of Life by William Jones

I watched as Hannah glided down the flagstone path that twisted through the Trinity Church Cemetery. She had the grace of a majestic bird in flight, and somehow managed to appear furtive as a mouse who had just spotted a high flying hawk....
